Appleton Pass 2007

August 27-29, 2007
The Dragon Feet let me join them on the first leg of their trek into the Olympic Mountains. Left to right is me, Joyce, Doug, Cindy, Don and Mt Olympus. I went only as far as Appleton Pass with them. They continued on into the park for a six day adventure. The trail begins at the Olympic Hot Springs trail head. The first 2.3 miles is on an old road that ends at the hot springs. The remaining 6.9 miles was through lush forest along Boulder Creek and steep switchbacks to the pass. The highlights were the many mushrooms, beautiful trail and waterfall, the famous Appleton switchbacks, the wildlife and the good company of the Dragon Feet four. The lowlights were mosquitos, 8 large downfall across the trail and the second failure to reach Hotcake Shelter. I unknowingly left camp without any food when I ventured off to find the shelter. It was a long day because I ran out of drinking water with three miles remaining to camp.
